The Parkway's very first stop: an 1890s log farmstead -- cabin, springhouse, barn -- was moved here piece by piece so day-one visitors could see mountain life before the road existed, right below a greenstone cliff face early settlers called "the hump."

Thomas Jefferson once believed Sharp Top was the tallest peak in the Blue Ridge (it isn't, but it's still the Parkway's most-photographed twin-summit view) -- a lake, a lodge, and a summit trail all sit in one bowl-shaped valley that's been a mountain resort since the 1850s.

Puckett Cabin (Orlean Hawks Puckett Cabin)

History

A midwife who lost all 24 of her own children to infancy went on to deliver more than 1,000 babies across these mountains -- her preserved split-rail-fenced log cabin still sits roadside exactly where she lived until her death at 102.
