Culture

Walk the battlefield where Missouri State Guard troops pushed hemp bales up the ravines toward Union earthworks, then see the Anderson House's surviving bullet and cannon scars. The grounds are self-guided during daylight, but house and battlefield tours follow a seasonal schedule.

Outdoors

A short trail reaches the broad rock shelter where excavations documented human occupation as far back as 10,000 years. Wayside exhibits explain the archaeology, while surrounding glades preserve the dry, rocky plant communities early inhabitants knew.

Parks & scenic

Stone castle ruins overlook the Lake of the Ozarks above springs, sinkholes, caves, and a natural bridge in a deeply karst landscape.

Outdoors

Walk the white silica-sand edge of a former quarry lake, then climb the bluff trail for Missouri River views or connect directly to the Katy Trail. The lake supports fishing and nonmotorized paddling, but swimming is prohibited.

A five-acre bluff-top city park south of downtown Hannibal with the kind of sweeping Mississippi view Mark Twain grew up staring at -- legend holds two star-crossed lovers from rival tribes jumped rather than be kept apart, giving the overlook its name and its ghost story.
