Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area
Oregon
Two sea caves collapsed into each other to form a bowl-shaped rock chamber that "violently churns, swirls, and foams" as the tide floods in -- surfers and bodyboarders ride the wave that forms at the bowl's mouth at the right tide, while everyone else just watches from the rim. Known locally, memorably, as "Satan's Cauldron" before the park service softened the name.
Why Roamward picked it
A free, dramatic, easy-access geological oddity squarely in the Astoria-Newport corridor gap (5 miles south of Depoe Bay, 8 miles north of Newport) -- a strong roadside-icons-adjacent story hook for a five-minute stop.
