Delaware is small. This itinerary stays honest about that — a tight coastal-and-river loop over beaches, a free cable ferry, wildlife refuges, and a couple of trail days.
Delaware will not pretend to be Montana. What it offers is a compact, finishable road trip: Atlantic beaches and cape trails, a working cable ferry on the Nanticoke, wildlife refuges on the bay, and short forest hikes inland. Audit note (August 2026): we do not yet publish a dedicated Delaware scenic-route corridor or a deep gem board for the state. This guide is the honest small version — 1–2 days if you stay coastal, 2–3 if you add the ferry and northern refuges.

Day 1 — Cape & beach towns
Start at Cape Henlopen State Park (Gordons Pond trail and the cape itself), then the Rehoboth / Dewey / Bethany beach string for boardwalk energy or quieter sand. This is the high-density coastal day; summer weekends are crowded — shoulder seasons feel like a different state.
Day 2 — Nanticoke ferry & southern green
Detour inland for the free Woodland Ferry (DelDOT, weekdays only — confirm hours) between Seaford and Laurel, then Trap Pond or Killens Pond for an easy southern park hike. Dogfish Head in Milton is the obvious brewery anchor if the crew wants a tasting stop on the way back to the coast.
Optional Day 3 — Bay refuges & Brandywine north
If you have a third day, Bombay Hook or Prime Hook for birds and big sky on the Delaware Bay, or push north to Brandywine Creek / White Clay Creek for Piedmont trails near the Pennsylvania line. That north end pairs with Wilmington museums if weather kills the trail plan.
Delaware rewards a long weekend, not a two-week expedition. Save the cape, the ferry, and one refuge — that is a complete First State card.
