Point of Rocks Interpretive Site (Cimarron National Grassland, Santa Fe Trail ruts)

Kansas

Visitingfree

Wagon-wheel ruts from the Santa Fe Trail's Cimarron Cutoff are still visible cut into the ground below this bluff -- the third-highest point in Kansas, and the same cliff-top view traders used in the 1820s to watch for both water and raiders along the Cimarron River.

Rare combo of Santa Fe Trail history + genuine short interpretive trail + free USFS site in the far-SW corner (Morton County), a part of the state Roamward has zero coverage in. Access road (FSR 600.3 / 600.3A) is gravel/two-track, passable by standard vehicle in dry weather but rutted and not recommended after rain -- flag as a mild-caveat gravel-road corridor rather than fully paved.
