Castle Rock (Gove County badlands)

Kansas

TypeParks & scenic
Visitingfree

A 70-foot chalk pillar rising alone out of eroded badlands, 11 miles of dirt road south of I-70 -- the kind of formation that looks trucked in from Utah until you remember you're still in Kansas, on land a rancher still lets strangers walk across on the honor system.

Free, no fees, no gate -- but the last several miles are unmaintained dirt/gravel county road (Castle Rock Road / county road 466) that gets rutted and impassable when wet; flag as a high-clearance-recommended, dry-weather-only detour off I-70 exit 107 (Quinter). Coordinate is the pillar itself (precise, not a polygon), the correct check-in-grade anchor since the surrounding badlands are private land.

Hours, admission, and access change — confirm with the official source before you plan the detour.
